Reiman Gardens in Ames is a beautiful place to visit this time of year. The outdoor area has paved paths which are perfect for strollers and I saw several families enjoying picnics throughout the gardens. The children's garden area provides a nice place for kids to play but just be aware that there is a small splash pad.
