Creek Walk Event at Thomas Mitchell Park - Mitchellville, Iowa

We attended a Polk County Conservation creek walk event this week at Thomas Mitchell Park.  We entered the creek across the road from shelter #2.  Just look for the steps in the photo below to find the point of entry.

The water depth varied from shallow to waist-deep (kids), knee-deep (me).

The naturalist leading the creek walk was excited to spot a spiny soft shell turtle who was laying eggs.

We didn't get close to the eggs, but here's a zoomed in photo.  It was a very cool thing for my boys to see.

The only downside to the creek walk was the amount of algae which made it kind of hard to walk as it got wrapped around our shoes.

The creek walk ended at a little sand bank that was perfect for sand play.
