Madison County: Winterset City Park

Winterset City Park is beautiful this time of year and has so much to offer.  Today we enjoyed climbing Clark Tower, navigating through the hedge maze and seeing the Cutler-Donahoe Covered Bridge.  My kids also love the main playground.

I recommend starting with a drive through the park to Clark Tower, which is a one-way road with scenic views. The road to the tower is open from approximately April 1st through November 15th.  Alternative, you can hike the Clark Tower Loop trail which is 2.3 miles.

Clark Tower is 25-feet high and was built in 1926.  A winding staircase leads to the middle level and a steep metal ladder leads to the top level.  The view from the top is worth the climb.

After returning from Clark Tower, the first playground you see is the largest in the park.  There are restrooms just across the road from it and many shaded picnic tables in the area.

There's also a small playground near the campground.

A short walk from the main playground is a popular hedge maze.  The goal is to find the sundial in the center of the maze.

After the hedge maze, I recommend crossing the road to check out the Cutler-Donahoe Bridge.  It was built in 1870 and moved to the park in 1979.
