WEBSTER COUNTY: West River Trail at Brushy Creek

We hiked the West River Trail at Brushy Creek State Recreation Area today, but did not complete the entire loop.  We turned around after a couple miles and hiked a total of 4.62 miles as shown on the map below.  The trail was snowy, icy and very muddy in some areas.  We parked at the Day Use Area on Wickwire Rd, which has two trailheads and vault restrooms available.

As of February 20, the trails are temporarily closed to non-foot traffic due to the wet conditions.  During dry conditions, horses are allowed on all trails except the very short Hackberry Trail.  We previously visited in March and had to step aside for many horses passing us, so I definitely preferred today's hike.
