The University of Iowa Museum of Natural History was founded in 1858. Admission is free and it's open Wednesday-Saturday. My kids were bored on the 1st floor but the bird and mammal exhibits on the 3rd floor are excellent. I think it's definitely worth visiting once and don't forget to also visit the Old Capitol Museum next door.
