We biked the Ankeny section of the High Trestle Trail today, starting at the Irvinedale Trailhead and turning around at the Oralabor Overpass, for a round trip total of 10 miles. The trailhead has picnic tables, restrooms, porch swings and a large parking lot.
There's currently construction near the trail on the section just south of Uptown for a Glow Trail project, however access to the trail is open.
As we got further south the trail became very sunny, however there were nice shady places along the route to take the 1,001 water breaks my son requested.
Uptown Ankeny has a variety of restaurants that are easy to access from the trail. Today we stopped at Uptown Dairy which has excellent ice cream. Next time, we'd like to try Mullets which I've heard is family-friendly and has a great rooftop seating area.
